So on July 20th THOS turned three years old. Crazy to think I have been living with this thing that long in two different countries as well. It has been a great year from my vantage point it seems there has been no downturn in the brotherhood sector of the economy. A high water mark is obviously Jim Murphy being recognized for his charitable/skate endeavors but along with that I have my eye on a lot of other seeds that have been planted and people tied to this community seem to be gravitating towards one another with results to follow. So THOS continues on into year 4 – keep the pics and stories flowing and I promise to keep it all moving so no one will ever have time to hang a sign on us.

Cheers, My Bruthas and Sistas!

414: Ben Cornish “King of all Media” : Portraits on and off the board.

Uber skater, Photographer, Print Maker, Film Maker, Editor, Dad…..Corn is the King of all media. Ben Cornish encouraged me when we were teens to take pictures (and skive off classes by hiding in the Graphic arts department dark room). In addition to being encouraged to take pics  by Corn another added benefit of being friends with Ben is you could count on having some experimental gem of a picture of yourself, either on or off your board. His skate photography is more then just visual documents of what trick one could pull or where you skated. The place, the trick or the antics are all secondary every click is a portrait whether you were on your board or off it. Here is what I am talking about:

I can go on all day with Ben’s pictures they make my point for me. You dont have to know the people in these photographs to appreciate their artistry. I for one would pay for a book with a big heaping helping of Ben’s work in it…encourage him to get on with it!

A longtime ago I made a “WHo’s on Deck entry” with  Bernie O’Dowd skating and East Coast’s  finest Bucky Lasek sitting on the platform of the  Hell Ramp

Who knew Ben had a great shot up his sleeve all these years later. I dig when stuff like this pops up. Hopefully sooner then later Ben will put the finishing touches on his book and we can all have one for the coffee table.

379: Benjamin P. Cornish presents: Demo! The Love of Destruction 1992

This classic documentary about Demolition Derby’s was Produced and Directed by Team Steam’s Ben Cornish circa 1992. Ben was famous for his homebrew movies during High School and college we all either helped or appeared in one or another (anyone remember Pall Mall, Head Banger from Hell, and the infamous Great Deoderant race). If I recall as a graduating final project he produced this masterpeice. Not only is it an incredibly insightful look into the wastefullness of American culture through the use of interviews it was hella fun and exciting to watch. Ben actually modifies a car and enters a Demo Derby by the end.

Who can forget the opening scene….A pounding bass line as a Mike Myers looking mechanic walks up to a car and smashes out the windows preparing it for Demo Derby specs and later the tribal Indian music as the car was decorated!!

It was premeired in New Jersey at a rented out theater all of Ben’s family and friends where in attendance with a shindig to follow. It later aired in a German Film Festival.

If you would like to see this and any other of Ben’s incredible films then start posting comments begging him to you tube it all for our pleasure!!!

Oh yeah….” This film is so damm AMERICAN it’ll make you PUKE!!: is the greatest tagline of all time.

I origanlly posted this back way back in 2006 and its finally here…thanks Ben!!
