Hope all is well with you. I wanted to fill you in on a project I’m getting involved with here in Baltimore.
The Skatepark of Baltimore is a non-profit started by Stephanie Murdock and is on a very serious mission to get a public concrete park built here in Baltimore City. Steph has spent countless hours building her organization from the ground up and has raised money thru true grass-routes efforts via contests, art-shows and the list goes on and on. We had a very important hearing in front of Baltimore City Council (news link here: http://wjz.com/sports/skateboard.skate.park.2.686592.html ) on March 27th which was a huge step in this process. To date, over $11,000 has been raised thru grass-route efforts and a $30,000 grant has been awarded thru the Abell Foundation (http://www.abell.org/ ). SOB was also given booth space at last years AST Dew Tour stop here in Baltimore and at the Virgin Festival at Pimlico Race track. Both spaces have been offered again for the 2008 events.
Attached are some literature pieces and further info on SOB. Any coverage you can provide will no doubt help.
Also here is a video that has helped our cause a bit which I’m not sure you have seen over there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GgWrV8TcUc
Here are links pics from a fundraising art show that SOB hosted a couple of weeks ago: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=42711288&albumId=1615760
And more pics from a fundraising contest hosted this past weekend: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=42711288&albumId=1653552
Dune from STEREO has stepped up and is sending in some goods for give-aways at contests and Rodney and Adam from SHUT have said they’ll do the same.
Hopefully the Triboro people will watch the video of the cop harrasing the kids in Balltimore and realize how important it is to build a park and also one people will want to skate at!! We can kill two birds with one stone here. First raising awareness and funds for SOB and two showing the Queens council what Baltimore would do if they had access to $1.25 million!
