Dan Tag tail slide The Barn New Jersey
Photo Jeff Roenning
Lordy Lordy this here one is vintage…Chuck Taylors for maximum pain when getting hit in the ankles by runaway boards. Cutt down polyester old man pants from the salvation army to insure proper splinter penetration into the hips. A protec helmet…the fashion equivalent of thepocket protector for skaters of the time. Im not sure if that is duct tape pr shoe gooed on leather on those trainers!
Anyway nice B-n-W vintage Barn shot Roenner!

This is a classic. The first time I saw Tag do a proper layback grind I wanted to learn them!
In the evolution of skateboarding (I accept that all things need to progress to be pure) this is a lost trick. I went to a demo a couple of years ago in Encinitas, CA and the kids were stoked on the pros runs. Typical modern very tricks with a lot of spins, Kick Flip Indys etc. But it was only when a pro did an all 80’s run did the crowd really go nuts. Bring on 1987!

Check out the Hosoi DVD. He does crazy layback grinds still. He skates a pool in 2006 in the extras and his laybacks rule. Also Danny Way does the sickest Christ Air too.
